Electric car allowance

Bought an electric car for your work? Compare the capital allowance with the flat rate.

If you buy a new, unused, fully electric car, HMRC lets you deduct the business share of its price from your profit in the tax year you buy it. This is the 100% first-year allowance. The tool compares it with the flat mileage rate for the same car. Example figures are filled in: change them to yours.

Only a car bought new and unused that is electric, or has zero CO2 emissions, gets the 100% allowance. For a sole trader it covers a car bought on or before 5 April 2027. A second-hand electric car gets a smaller yearly allowance instead (18% of its value before April 2026, 14% from April 2026); this tool shows the first year only.

You cannot claim capital allowances on a car you already use the flat mileage rate for. Once you use the flat rate for a car, you must keep using it for as long as you use that car for your business.
